Hancestry the album

Hancestry, the debut album from The Solomon Gundy Band is a powerful statement of resilience, reinvention, and return. Rooted in the Jazz tradition and infused with afro-diasporic influences, punk, reggae and electronica, Hancestry links the 80's pioneers of black british jazz with today's vibrant and eclectic UK scene. Featuring an incredible multi-generational, multi-heritage line-up of international talent, featuring specials guests including UK Jazz legend Courtney Pine, emerging Piano star Sultan Stevenson and Trinidadian singer-songwriter Drew Gonsalves.

“Often driven by super-strong latin and afro-diasporic rhythms this music is at the same time danceable and brain-food, with Corby's passion for the Jazz tradition and the socio-political never far from the surface.”

Jez Nelson (One Jazz)

"I love how this project is not one-dimensional, it is multi-dimensional. It is fantastic music!"

The Solomon Gundy Band forge a sound rooted in both the Jazz tradition and the British Caribbean experience. Their debut album ‘Hancestry’ combines virtuosity with free-improvisation, heavy afro grooves with punk-energy, poetic lyrics with working-class grit. It is conscious sound system jazz for the 21st century.

Solomon Gundy is a spicy  Jamaican pickled Herring paste usually served with crackers as an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre. The term is originally from the French word "salmigondis", which refers to a disparate assembly of things, ideas, or people forming an coherent whole

Led by visionary trumpeter and UK jazz catalyst Sean Corby their music channels the pioneering spirit of 80's Jazz Warriors, electric Miles Davis, the afro-diasporic language of Cuba, New Orleans, and Kingston Jamaica, whilst being uniquely shaped by the vibrant eclecticism of the UK music world.

Produced by Loose Tubes/Freak Power maverick Ashley Slater and two-time Grammy and Juno nominated electronic artist/producer  Carmen Rizzo, their debut album, 'Hancestry,' features  guest contributions from UK jazz legend Courtney Pine, Trinidadian singer-songwriter Drew Gonsalves, orignal Tomorrow's Warriors vocalist Julie Dexter, emerging piano star Sultan Stevenson and showcases a remarkable array of generational talent. With tracks that include the words of community activist Ismahil Blaigrove and author James Baldwin, along with dedications to Leon Forrest and Zora Neale Hurston.

The title track from the debut album by The Solomon Gundy Band, Hancestry is dedicated to American author, anthropologist, and folklorist Zora Neale Hurston. Inspired by her explorations of Jamaican religious and metaphysical culture, the track features afro-diasporic grooves, haunting voices, and interplay between bandleader and trumpeter Sean Corby and guitarist Phil Dawson reminiscent of Miles Davis's In A Silent Way Period.
